Two numbers decide whether a hat works: circumference, which a strap can forgive, and crown depth, which it cannot.
Run a soft tape around your head about a centimetre above your ears and across the middle of your forehead — where a cap's sweatband would sit. Keep it snug, not tight. Measure twice; most people are between 56 and 60 cm.
If you land between two sizes on a fitted cap, go up. Crowns relax slightly with wear, but they never gain a size.
Crown depth is the distance from the sweatband to the top button. It decides how much of your head the hat covers, and it is the reason two caps in the same size can look completely different on the same person.
Anything marked One Size fits roughly 55–61 cm via a snap, slide buckle, or stretch band. Beanies are knitted to stretch across the same range without a closure. If your measurement is outside that, the fitted range is the safer bet.
